About Flogging Molly
Before Flogging Molly was formed, Dave King was the lead singer for the heavy metal band Fastway. He also fronted a hard rock band called Katmandu in the early 90s. A short time later ,King retained a record deal with Epic Records and began work on a solo album. But he reconsidered his deal when the label opposed his desire to bring in traditional Irish Instruments. So he negotiated out of the deal to begin a musical career on his own terms.
Then, in 1993, King met Ted Hutt, Jeff Peters, Paul Crowder, and Bridget Regan and they formed a band that was dedicated to having a Celtic feel. The band made use of Irish traditional and rock music that made use of King’s poetic lyrics and the band’s rocking melodies.
The band played locally in an LA pub called Molly Malone’s that helped them build a local following. And this also helped them develop the famous Flogging Molly’s sound. After a brief period of lineup changes, the modern Flogging Molly band was formed.
The band continued their routine of playing every Monday night at Molly Malone’s while they were working on a live album, which was released in 1997.
The band was eventually signed onto SideOneDummy Records after a show where the record company’s owner noted the band’s intensity.
Where the name came from
In an interview with Kerrang! magazine, King explained that the name was chosen, in part, because of the bar that supported the band from the very beginning. He explained that the band played there every monday and the band often felt like they were ‘flogging it to death’.So the name made sense.
